About Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery, or reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure that removes excess fat, tissue, and skin from large breasts. Women with overly large breasts often consider reductions because they suffer from physical symptoms and emotional distress. Breast reductions are also considered by women bothered by the aesthetic appearance of their disproportionate breast size.
Ideal Candidates for Breast Reduction Surgery
Ideal candidates for reduction surgery have a stable body weight, overall good health. They are non-smokers, and have realistic expectations of what the surgery can achieve.
Women typically consider breast reductions because their large breasts lead to symptoms such as:
- Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain, often severe enough to require pain medication
- Chronic rash or skin irritation under the breasts
- Shoulder indentations from bra straps
- Nerve pain
- Restricted activity
- Difficulty fitting into clothing (especially bras)
- Emotional distress/self-consciousness due to their large breasts
Patients who are not good candidates for a breast reduction are those planning on becoming pregnant in the near future, currently pregnant or breastfeeding, or have active breast disease.
Breast Reduction Consultation
The first step of a breast reduction is a consultation with Dr. Mahmood at her Union Square, New York practice. At the consultation, Dr. Mahmood evaluates medical history, overall health, medications, breast history, and surgical history. She then discusses your goals for ideal breast size and appearance and provides a description of the procedure. This description includes a detailed discussion of scar appearance, risks, benefits, and the recovery process.
Next, Dr. Mahmood performs a physical exam and takes measurements of the breasts and notes any asymmetry.
After a complete evaluation, Dr. Mahmood recommends a specific breast reduction technique to reduce the patient’s breast size based on their needs, expectations, breast size, and breast measurements.
Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction surgery begins with an incision around the areola and on the breast to create a ‘lollipop’ or in some cases, ‘anchor’ scar.
Next, the doctor removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin is to reduce the breast size.
After the excess areas are removed the breasts are reshaped and the nipple and areola are repositioned. The individual nipples and areolas usually remain attached to the breast, but very rarely, if the breasts are severely enlarged, the nipple and areola must be removed and put back on as a graft at the higher, more youthful position. This is discussed in detail prior to surgery.
The breast tissue that is removed is weighed, particularly if a specific weight is required for insurance purposes. It is then submitted for evaluation by a pathologist who closely evaluates the tissue under a microscope to ensure there are no abnormal cells.
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia. All of the sutures are dissolvable, and there are no drains used.
Recovery and After Care
After the procedure, patients should wear a soft supportive surgical or sports bra for 1 to 2 months and avoid vigorous exercise or heavy lifting for 1 month after surgery.
Patients are seen in Dr. Mahmood’s Union Square office at one day after surgery, one week, one month, three months, and as needed. At each post-operative visit Dr. Mahmood provides step-by-step guidance regarding when to increase physical activity, optimal scar treatment, and how to ensure a beautiful final result.
Breast reduction results are noticed immediately after surgery, but the final outcome is appreciated approximately three months after surgery when the swelling has resolved. Disproportionately large breasts, once successfully reduced, can lead to outcomes such as:
- Decreased neck and back pain
- Less risk of rashes in breast folds
- Firmer, more youthful looking breasts
- Breasts will fit more comfortably in bras
- Better proportioned breasts, leading to a more balanced silhouette
- Clothes will look and feel better, boosting confidence
Dr. Mahmood firmly believes that while the goal of a breast reduction is to reduce the breast size, the final result should still look youthful and with a beautiful shape and contour.
Patients who have undergone breast reduction tend to have an extremely high satisfaction level, both in relief of their symptoms, improvement in self-esteem, and enhancement of aesthetic appearance and body contour.
