Liposuction is a procedure that removes excess fat from specific areas of the body. When you gain weight, the size and volume of fate cells also increase. Liposuction reduces the number of these excess fat cells in specific areas to create a slimmer and contoured body.
Also referred to as lipoplasty, lipo, and body contouring, the procedure typically focuses on areas of the body that don’t respond to diet and exercise, particularly when overall body weight is stable.
While there are several non-invasive body contouring treatments available, only liposuction removes the fat in a consistent, predictable, and permanent manner.
Ideal Candidates for Liposuction
Ideal candidates for liposuction are healthy individuals within 30% of their ideal weight. They have firm, elastic skin, and no significant overhanging skin. The improved shape and contour are permanent as long as body weight remains stable. Liposuction is best for patients who have practice a healthy lifestyle and understand that it is a contouring tool.
Frequently treated areas of the body include the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, back, bra roll, axilla, upper arms, chin, neck, inner knee, and chest.
Once the fat is removed, the skin retracts over time and molds to the newly improved contour. Good skin tone and elasticity help make the newly contoured skin appear smooth, whereas thin skin with poor elasticity may still appear loose in treated areas.
Lipo is not the best procedure to address cellulite, stretch marks, or treat obesity.
Liposuction procedures begin with marking the areas of unwanted, excess fat to be removed. These are the areas discussed during your consultation, and confirmed on the day of surgery.
Next, small, well-hidden incisions are made in natural bodily creases next to the areas to be treated. Tumescent solution (a fluid mixture that contains saline, a local anesthestic, and adrenaline) is then infused in the fat between the skin and muscle, to reduce bleeding and trauma to the tissue.
From there, the doctor inserts in the small incisions a thin stainless steel instrument (called a cannula) attached to suction. Dr. Mahmood then proceeds with one of the two most common methods of liposuction – suction-assisted lipectomy using a power-assisted device for optimal fat removal, or ultrasound-assisted lipectomy. Suction-assisted lipectomy involves mechanical disruption of the fat with the power-assisted device and cannula breaking up the fat and suctioning it out, and ultrasound-assisted lipectomy involves the use of ultrasonic energy to liquify the fat and then suction it out.
The fat is removed ensuring that it is done evenly and symmetrically between sides. The small incisions are closed with a fine suture which is removed at one week after the surgery.
Liposuction Recovery & After Care
After liposuction surgery, Dr. Mahmood will place a compression garment. Compression is essential both to reduce swelling and to help the skin retract and contour to the body. The compression garment is advised for four to six weeks, and as much as tolerated after that time.
You will need someone to escort you home, and are encouraged to walk as soon as possible. You will be prescribed a pain medication for use within the first few days and an antibiotic.
Patients can expect some soreness, swelling and bruising, and are advised to avoid vigorous exercise for four weeks.
Body contour improvements are noticeable immediately following liposuction. Results will continue to be evident once the swelling and fluid retention decrease during the first three months after surgery, but it may take several months for swelling to resolve fully. Wearing a compression garment is a valuable component in facilitating resolution of swelling and helping your body resorb fluid.
Body contouring results are long-lasting, as long as patients maintain body weight and a healthy lifestyle after surgery.
