About Thigh Lift Surgery

Thigh lift surgery, or thighplasty, reshapes the thighs by removing excess fat and skin of the thighs. Removing this excess skin and fat leads to smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the lower body and thighs.

Excess fat or loose, hanging skin of the inner thighs can occur with aging, gravity, weight loss procedures (ie: gastric bypass/sleeve), weight loss or gain, and genetics.

If diet and exercise have not accomplished your lower body goals, a surgical thigh lift may be the right treatment for you.

Ideal Candidates for Thigh Lift Surgery

Ideal candidates for a thigh lift typically are:woman-beach-lean-thighs

  • People with excess soft tissue along the inner and/or outer thigh regions
  • Individuals who have recently lost significant weight or have reduced skin elasticity
  • People with thighs that are saggy, dimpled or flabby in appearance
  • Individuals in good overall health
  • Non-smokers
  • People whose weight is relatively stable
  • Individuals with realistic expectations and goals for their thigh lift surgery
  • People in good overall health and committed to a healthy lifestyle

In general, patients who commit to following post-surgery instructions (including activity restrictions) will have optimal results.

Thigh Lift Surgery

Thigh lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia at Dr. Mahmood’s Upper East Side surgical suite. The surgery is an outpatient procedure and takes about 3-4 hours.

On the day of surgery, Dr. Mahmood will carefully measure and draw the planned incisions on your legs. Next, you will be taken to the operating room where you will receive general anesthesia by a board certified anesthesiologist.

To begin the thigh lift, Dr. Mahmood can either perform liposuction first, or remove the excess skin and fat directly. Once the tissue is removed, multiple layers of dissolvable stitches are placed to support the tissues and reinforce the newly shaped contour.

Thigh lifts are performed using either an inner incision in the groin crease only, or one that also extends down the inside of the leg. The incision pattern depends on the area(s) to be treated, the extent of treatment necessary, and surgeon and patient preference.

Inner Thigh Lift Incision

The inner thigh lift incision is made at the groin and, for optimal results, can extend along the inseam of the inner thigh down to the knee if necessary.

Some individuals may be candidates for a minimal incision inner thigh lift that strictly involves an incision in the groin region. The type of inner thigh lift incision best fit for your aesthetic goals will be determined at your consultation and confirmed at your pre-operative visit.

Outer Thigh Lift Incision

Improving your outer thigh’s contour may require an incision that extends from the groin along the outside of the leg down to the outer knee. While this approach is less common, some patients have hanging skin of the outer thighs that is bothersome, which requires this method.

Regardless of the incision type, Dr. Mahmood will be strategic in her incision placement to make sure surgical scars are hidden within the bikini area as best as possible.thigh-lift-surgery-outer-incision

Recovery & After Care

Immediately following your thigh lift surgery, compression garments are applied to protect the incisions and to help reduce swelling.

Pain medication and an antibiotic are prescribed, and you will need an escort to take you home.

During your recovery from thigh lift surgery you may have surgical drains present, which are generally removed one week after surgery.

Swelling and bruising are common, and can last several weeks; Arnica Forte, a natural vitamin, can help reduce bruising. Keeping the legs elevated when sitting or sleeping can also facilitate swelling reduction.

Patients are advised to wear a compression garment for four to six weeks, to help reduce swelling and support the tissue as it heals. Patients may walk immediately but are instructed to refrain from vigorous activity or heavy lifting for one month after surgery.

Total thigh lift recovery time depends on the patient and extent of the procedure. Most patients take up to ten days off from work for recovery.

Thigh Lift Results

Thigh lift results are almost immediately visible. Most patients will have much slimmer thighs with better contour and tone. Skin quality will also be improved by the procedure

Patients should understand that it may take several months for swelling to resolve and for the full effect of the surgery to be seen.

Results are long-lasting if a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle are maintained.

More About Your Consultation

During your thigh lift consultation, Dr. Mahmood will review your medical history, medications, smoking status, previous surgeries, and overall health. After performing a thorough physical exam and discussing your surgical goals and ideal look, she will discuss which treatment option will be the most appropriate to help achieve your desired result safely and effectively.

Liposuction alone may remove excess fat deposits in individuals with good skin elasticity.  For cases where the skin is loose, a thigh lift with, or without, liposuction may be suggested. Dr. Mahmood will review the procedure in detail including planned incisions, risks, and benefits, and expected recovery.
