About Thigh Lift Surgery
Thigh lift surgery reshapes the legs by removing excess fat and skin of the thighs. Removing this excess skin and fat leads to smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the lower body and thighs.
Excess fat or loose, hanging skin of the inner thighs can occur with aging, gravity, weight loss procedures (ie: gastric bypass/sleeve), weight loss or gain, and genetics.
If diet and exercise have not accomplished your lower body goals a surgical thigh lift may be the right treatment for you.
Ideal Candidates for Thigh Lift
Ideal candidates for a thigh lift are patients who are in good overall health, non-smokers, stable weight, and have realistic expectations. Patients who are committed to complying with post-surgery instructions including activity restrictions are those who will have an optimal result.
Thigh Lift Procedure
Thigh lifts are performed under general anesthesia and one of two incisions patters may be used. The incision pattern will depend on the area(s) to be treated, the extent of treatment necessary, and surgeon and patient preference.
Inner Thigh Lift Incision
Inner thigh lift incisions are made at the groin and extend along the inseam of the inner thigh down to the knee.
You may also be a candidate for a minimal incision inner thigh lift that involves an incision only in the groin region. This will be determined at your consultation and confirmed at your pre-operative visit, and Dr. Mahmood will discuss which approach will be the best for your aesthetic goals.
Outer Thigh Lift Incision
Improving your outer thigh’s contour may require an incision that extends from the groin along the outside of the leg down to the outer knee. While this approach is less common, some patients have hanging skin of the outer thighs that is bothersome and requires this method.
On the day of surgery, Dr. Mahmood will carefully measure and draw the planned incisions and you will then be taken to the operating room where you will undergo general anesthesia. Dr. Mahmood will then either perform liposuction first, or proceed with removal of the excess thigh skin and fat directly. Once the tissue is removed, multiple layers of dissolvable stitches are placed to support the tissues and to reinforce the newly shaped contour. Surgical drains may be placed, which are generally removed at one week after surgery. Dr. Mahmood will then place a compression garment to protect the incisions and to help reduce swelling.
Recovery & After Care
Patients will need someone to take them home after surgery.
Pain medication and an antibiotic will be prescribed.
Swelling and bruising are common, and can last several weeks; Arnica Forte, a natural vitamin, can help reduce bruising. Keeping the legs elevated when sitting or sleeping can also facilitate swelling reduction.
Patients are advised to wear a compression garment for four to six weeks, which helps reduce swelling and support the tissue as it heals. Patients may walk immediately but are instructed to refrain from vigorous activity or heavy lifting for one month after surgery.
Thigh lift results are almost immediately visible. With that being said, it may take months for swelling to resolve and for the full effect of the surgery to be seen.
Results are long-lasting if a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle are maintained.

More About Your Consultation

Liposuction alone may remove excess fat deposits in individuals with good skin elasticity. For cases where the skin is loose, a thigh lift with, or without, liposuction may be suggested. Dr. Mahmood will review the procedure in detail including planned incisions, risks, and benefits, and expected recovery.
