About Mini Tummy Tuck
Mini tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that addresses the lower abdomen. The procedure has become increasingly popular in recent years, which is no surprise considering one of the most common concerns I hear in my practice is regarding the appearance of patients’ abdominal region.
Changes to the appearance of the abdominal region commonly occur as a result of:
- loose abdominal skin or stretch marks after having children
- excess skin and tissue from weight fluctuations
- excess skin from massive weight loss surgery or aging
- a distorted appearance of the lower abdomen from a previous C-section scar.
Patients seeking plastic surgery for the abdominal region not only present with different cosmetic concerns, but have different goals and bodies. Many mention the word ‘mini tummy tuck’ but don’t know what it entails or whether they are a candidate. So, what is a mini tummy tuck and who is eligible?
What is a Mini Tummy Tuck (Mini Abdominoplasty)?
A mini tummy tuck (or mini abdominoplasty) addresses loose skin, excess tissue, and stretch marks of the lower abdomen. This procedure involves a well-hidden incision low in the bikini area, which varies in length based on how much skin needs to be removed. It often includes liposuction of the supra-pubic area to further debulk and flatten the area of the lower abdomen. It addresses only the lower abdomen, the part below the belly button. Mini tummy tuck surgery takes approximately 1-2 hours, can be performed under general anesthesia, IV sedation, or local anesthesia, and does not involve the use of drains.
Who is an Ideal Candidate?
Ideal candidates are patients with loose skin, stretch marks, or a minor-to-moderate degree of excess abdominal fat in the lower abdomen.
Mini Tummy Tuck Procedure
A mini tummy tuck can be performed under general anesthesia, IV sedation, or local anesthesia based on patient preference and surgeon recommendation. The surgery takes approximately 1-2 hours. The procedure involves a well-hidden incision low in the bikini area, which varies in length based on how much skin needs to be removed. It often includes liposuction of the suprapubic area to further debulk and flatten the area of the lower abdomen. It addresses only the lower abdomen, the part below the belly button. Mini-tummy tuck surgery does not involve the use of drains, and all stitches are dissolvable. Patients should expect 1-2 days of downtime prior to resuming daily activities, and are advised to abstain from working out for 1 month.
A mini tummy tuck results in a flatter, toned appearance of the lower abdomen, and involves a shorter recovery, less downtime, and often a shorter scar. Results are long-lasting and are better maintained if the patient follows a healthy lifestyle including diet and exercise.
When is a Traditional “Full” Tummy Tuck Needed?
Most patients who seek treatment with a tummy tuck are bothered by excess skin, fat, and/or stretch marks above and below the belly button. A classic tummy tuck improves the appearance of the entire abdomen, and is often combined with liposuction of the waist for improved contour. Similar to a mini tummy tuck, it involves a low, well-hidden incision in the bikini area, but in the case of a full tummy tuck, an incision is also made around the belly button to remove excess skin and tissue above the navel, and to replace the belly button in a natural position. This procedure also allows repair of the separated abdominal muscles, or rectus diastasis, that occurs from pregnancy, and can also include repair of a small hernia.
Results of a traditional tummy tuck involve a flatter, toned, appearance of the entire abdomen, and includes temporary placement of drains that are removed within 1-2 weeks after the procedure. Patients are advised to take at least one week off from work, and recovery is complete within one month.
Ultimately, whether or not a patient is better suited for a mini tummy tuck or a traditional tummy tuck is based on their cosmetic concerns, their goals, and their physical exam, and the treatment plan is tailored to the individual patient.
Mini Tummy Tuck Surgery Cost NYC
The cost of a mini tummy tuck varies on a patient-by-patient basis. All tummy tucks are typically considered a cosmetic procedure, which means it is not covered by insurance. There are certain times insurance may cover the procedure (such as when it is necessary for hernia repair) but these cases are not common in at practice.
